Birthday Party Bingo: A Fun Game for Any Age

Birthday bingo is one of the most adaptable party games because you can tailor the content completely to the person being celebrated — their favorite things, inside jokes, milestones, and memories. It works whether you're throwing a 7-year-old's princess party or a 50th birthday celebration with 40 guests. Here's how to approach each.

Kids Birthday Bingo

For ages 4–9, birthday bingo is most effective when the theme of the party matches the bingo words. A dinosaur-themed party gets dinosaur bingo: T-rex, triceratops, fossil, volcano, eggs, roar, and so on. A princess party gets: tiara, castle, dragon, fairy godmother, glass slipper, carriage. Matching the game to the theme makes both feel more cohesive.

Use a 3×3 or 4×4 grid for young kids — 25 squares is a lot to scan at that age. Call each word slowly, show a picture if you have one, and give kids time to find it. Running 3–4 short rounds keeps energy up and gives multiple winners, which is important at a kids' party where one winner and 14 disappointed children is a bad outcome.

Candy bingo variant: Give kids M&Ms or small candies as markers. They mark squares with the candy and get to eat it at the end of the game. This is extremely popular with elementary-age kids, keeps cleanup easy, and the prizes take care of themselves. Check for allergies first.

Teen Birthday Bingo

Teens tend to be skeptical of party games, but custom birthday bingo can win them over if the content is genuinely funny or personal. Fill the cards with references to shared experiences, memes the group will recognize, or specifics about the birthday person: their celebrity crush, their catchphrase, their most embarrassing moment, their favorite song, etc. The more specific and personal the content, the better it lands.

Skip the prizes for teens — the social reward of being first, and the recognition that comes with calling "BINGO!" in front of friends, is usually sufficient motivation. If you do want prizes, gift cards or something experiential (movie tickets, food delivery credit) work better than physical items.

Adult Milestone Birthdays (30, 40, 50+)

Milestone birthday bingo is a standout party activity because you can build the word list around the honoree's life. For a 40th birthday, cards might include: "the year they were born," "first job," "college city," "the car they drove in their 20s," "their partner's name," "number of countries visited," "their go-to karaoke song," and so on. The host reads a clue about each item and guests have to figure out which square to mark.

This format doubles as a tribute to the birthday person — it celebrates who they are and what they've experienced. It works especially well at a dinner or seated reception where you have a captive audience for 20–30 minutes.

Another format for adults: "things that will definitely happen at this party" bingo. Squares include predictions like: "someone tells the birthday story from 1997," "the birthday person cries," "someone sings off-key," "the DJ plays their least favorite song." Guests mark squares as events unfold throughout the party.

General Birthday Bingo Tips

• Personalize the card title to the birthday person's name: "Sophia's Birthday Bingo" feels more special than a generic card.
• Print on colored paper or cardstock in the party's color scheme for a more polished look.
• For large parties (20+ guests), run at least two rounds so more people get a chance to win.
• For very young kids (under 6), consider using pictures instead of words. Most bingo generators support custom content — just use short, clear picture descriptions.
